Professional Development Portfolio Workshop Syllabus


E518/S512 - Workshop
Individual and group study of current issues and problems in elementary and secondary education and counseling.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO PROJECT
This workshop is designed as a collaborative inquiry project investigating the question, "How can technology enhance learning?" Participants will assess the learning needs of students in their classrooms, identify a student learning goal and a related professional development goal(s), identify and implement appropriate interventions, gather and analyze data, and develop a portfolio which will document goal attainment and their own learning.

MAJOR LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will:
  1. contribute to the collaborative inquiry project;
  2. design and conduct an individual inquiry project related to the collaborative research questions by: identifying a student learning need; designing appropriate intervention(s); observing, assessing, and reflecting on student learning; and gathering, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data;
  3. investigate best practices and current research related to the inquiry project and interventions;
  4. use technology tools to support interventions, data gathering and analysis, and their own professional development;
  5. develop a professional portfolio to document student learning and professional growth;
  6. reflect on student learning and their own professional growth.

TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS
None required however resources will be provided.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS ANTICIPATED TIME

  1. ATTENDANCE is required at all workshop scheduled sessions. 45 hours
  2. PREPARATION. Participants are expected to spend additional time 15 hours to complete their individual class projects.
  3. JOURNAL. Participants are to keep a journal of their experiences reflecting 15 hours on student learning and their own professional growth. A summary of these reflections will be included in their professional portfolio.
  4. INQUIRY PROJECTS. Participants are required to assess student learning 65 hours needs in their own classroom, identify a student learning goal, design and implement an intervention, gather and analyze data, draw conclusions, develop a portfolio to document attainment of student learning and professional development goals.
