Setting the Stage >
Professional Standards Standards for teachers have been developed on both the state and the national level. Exploration of national standards connects educators to the larger academic community. The standards developed for Indiana teachers by the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) are based on the standards developed by national organizations. These Standards are performance based and will be required for initial licensure by graduates in 2006. All Indiana teachers should be familiar with the IPSB Standards. Discipline specific Standards, as well as standards which define overall good practice have been developed at the national level. At the state level, content area standards provide indicators for teacher knowledge, performance, and disposition. Standards for developmental levels, rather than grade level specific standards are aligned with the NBPT Standards. Teacher preparation will require both content area and developmental level. Current practitioners should become familiar with the standards to examine and reflect on the relationship between the them and their own preparation, knowledge base, belief and resulting practice. When used as a tool, the standards will help educators evaluate their own preparation and their professional progress toward employing best practices.
