The Content and Developmental Standards developed by the IPSB

Content - The Content Standards developed by the IPSB currently include Building Level  Administrators, District Administrators, Generalist for Teachers of Early and Middle Childhood,  English as a New Language, English/Language Arts, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Health Education and Physical Education, Library/Media, Mathematics, School Services Professionals, Science, Social Studies, Exceptional Needs, and Vocational Education.

Developmental Levels - Best Practice (see below) provides this statement about the importance of considering "developmental" understandings. "Children grow through a series of definable but not rigid stages, and schooling should fit its activities to the developmental level of students." (p.8)

The IPSB has developed standards for four developmental areas: Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Early Adolescence, and Adolescence and Young Adulthood. In order for a teacher candidate to obtain licensure in Indiana in the future (graduates in 2006), the candidate must have met the standards for at least one developmental area, and one content area.

Best Practices- Best practice describes practice employed to create the most effective learning environment as defined by the preponderance of research.

Best Practice, New Standards for Teaching and Learning in America's Schools, Zemelman, Daniels, Hyde, Heinemann, 1998 is an excellent resource which examines best practice in reading, writing,  mathematics, science, social studies, and fine arts. This book can be found at http://www.heinemann.com.
